After Hearings, Congress Takes the Offensive

There was one main theme that came out of the yesterday's Congressional Amtrak hearings. Confidence in David Gunn's leadership has been critical to the recent pro-Amtrak votes in both the House and Senate. So what will happen now that he is gone?

Rightly or wrongly, Congress has been skeptical in the past about Amtrak's ability to meet its full potential. However, both parties have put significant stock in Gunn's ability to accomplish this goal. With Gunn fired, however, it is unclear if Congress will maintain this level of trust. Rep. Bob Menendez of New Jersey made it clear that he certainly did not, when he told Board Chairman David Laney and Bush administration official Jeffery Rosen, "Mr. Laney, Mr. Rosen, I'll be very blunt here: I don't trust you, and I don't think this Congress can trust you."

However, rather than loosing faith in America's railroad, it appears that Congress will work to ensure Amtrak's Board is trustworthy.

How will this happen? By rooting out the flaws in Amtrak's charter that lead to a Board full of hacks, cronies, and wealthy Bush fundraisers without any railroad experience.

Rep. Michael Castle (co-chair of the House Passenger Rail Caucus) testified that he is introducing legislation to overhaul the board and ensure its members are experienced, knowledgable, and commited to ensuring America has a robust rail system as a transportation option.
