We do not want the Railroads to park their trains loaded with toxic chemicals in our neighborhoods. We do not want their parked trains to block access to the Schuylkill River Park Trail.

Dear Mr. Ward,

I am very concerned that train cars full of chlorine gas and other hazardous materials are being brought by CSX into Philadelphia.  This dangerous cargo travels right next to thousands of residents’ homes in numerous City neighborhoods and the new Schuylkill River Park.  I worry that an accident similar or worse than the one that killed nine people in South Carolina in December 2004 could happen here in Philadelphia.  Hazardous train cars are often parked on these tracks for hours and are an easy target for terrorists.  What kind of security does CSX maintain for parked trains?

Given the proximity of the East Schuylkill line to many of Philadelphia’s residential neighborhoods, schools, businesses core, universities, parks and other key roads and highways, I ask that you seriously consider taking action to cease bringing such dangerous chemicals and materials so close to the populated sections of Philadelphia.  If safety is paramount to CSX, as it maintains, then CSX should take a preventative approach to toxic chemicals to keep Philadelphia’s residents safer.   I understand that your company is now rerouting hazardous cargo around Washington, D.C. and believe that CSX should be able to do the same for Philadelphia.

Please stop exposing Philadelphia to dangerous and hazardous chemicals and materials by altering the rail route CSX uses to transport such materials. Please stop parking trains filled with rotting garbage in Philadelphia neighborhoods which can pose a health hazard. Please stop paking trains on the East Schuylkill line which block access to the Schuylkill River Trail.
