Public Needs YOU to Stop The FCC Now! (MB 05-311)

ACTION ALERT!

This site is set up to make it easy for you to write your Congressional delegation. They need to know that the FCC is disrespecting Congressional power as they rewrite cable law. It is important for Congress to know that their constituents are active in community media and that you are ready to fight.

The rules of this process are written against your interests. You are not supposed to call or write the FCC right now, but your Congressmembers can.

Being written out of the law by the FCC:

~~Support for Public, Education and Government Access Channels.~~ Gone

~~Channel capacity for Public, Education and Government Access Channels.~~ Gone

~~Your city's right to reasonable payment by the telephone and cable companies who make billions of dollars using public land.~~ Gone.

~~Your city's public safety and educational communication systems.~~ Gone.

The the Congressional Cable law was re-written on December 20th. Your Congress members must stop the FCC now. Tell them to support your community. Tell them to forward your concerns to the FCC NOW!

As your constituent, I URGE you to tell the FCC to stop over-stepping its bounds in re-writing cable franchise law (MB DN 05-311).

We ask that you write a strongly worded letter to the FCC expressing your serious concern about the rules that the FCC is considering adopting, including:

***Elimination of support for Public, Education, Government Access (PEG);
***Elimination of support for Institutional Networks. including many public safety or educational communications systems.
***Elimination of required PEG Channel capacity by new providers;
***Elimination of protection against geographic discrimination in rural and poor communities.

Many of the proposed rules usurp your Congressional authority with the FCC rewriting fundamental parts of the exisiting Federal Law.

THE PROCESS DISRESPECTS YOUR CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORITY.

If allowed to stand unchallenged, this rewrite of law would set precedent for the FCC to act outside the stated intention of other laws put forth by Congress.  
 
Any such FCC rulemaking which has to be overturned by the court will cost the tax-payers millions of dollars in unnecessary legal fees.   The Commission has the fiduciary responsibility to be certain that any rule-making is absolutely sound legally.
 
The FCC should react to Congressional action.  Congress should not be forced to react to FCC action in the upcoming session.

Your letter should urge that the FCC allow more time to hear more input before taking any action.
