Make the death penalty less unfair!

On Tuesday, May 1, the House Judiciary II committee will consider two bills that are technical changes to the death penalty statute.  Although seemingly insignificant the two bills will significantly increase the amount of integrity involved in the death penalty process.

The first bill, H784  Execution/Change Age, will raise the eligibility age for the death penalty to age 18 from age 17 to match US Supreme Court guidelines.

The second, H786 LEO Provide Info to DA for Discovery, will require law enforcement to give all of their information over to district attorneys.  Law enforcement should already give their information to the district attorneys.  This bill will require law enforcement to statutorily hand over their information which will also give defense attorneys access to the same information through recently passed discovery laws.

These bills are simply technical changes to the statutes however, they are two very important steps toward significant reform of capital punishment in North Carolina.
