This simple reform would help ensure fairness in capital sentencing. Race continues to play an undeniable role in North Carolina's use of the death penalty and must be addressed. I ask that you vote to concur with the version of the NC Racial Justice Act that will come before the Senate for a vote this week. Statewide statistics are a crucial portion of this bill and will allow Courts to utilize all available information and make appropriate decisions on whether racial bias was involved in a particular case. This reform is a conservative effort that opponents and supporters of the death penalty can support. Race should never be a factor when considering a punishment as irreversible as a death sentence. The NC Racial Justice Act is a fair sentencing reform that seeks to address racial disparities in capital sentencing.   The bill would allow defendants to present statistical evidence to determine if race played a significant role in a his/her death sentence or trial.   If a defendant is successful under RJA,  his/her sentence of death would be replaced with a sentence of Life in Prison Without Parole.   Learn More:  NC Racial Justice Act RJA in the News Current Status of RJA Support for RJA
