Nearing the end of the road for the Racial Justice Act...

North Carolinian advocates for the Racial Justice Act have called, emailed, faxed, and visited their legislators in record numbers.  Media outlets across the state have run countless articles and editorials supporting RJA.  Events, press conferences, and rallies have occurred in the eastern, western, and central part of the state.  The message is clear: North Carolinians OVERWHELMINGLY support the Racial Justice Act. November 22, 2009 Subject: Dear Senator, The Racial Justice Act (S461) is a step in the right direction for North Carolina. I am not comfortable knowing racial bias still plays a role in the death penalty in my state. This fair sentencing reform would allow a defendant to have his case re-examined if there is evidence of racial discrimination. If successful, a defendant would still spend his or her natural life in prison. The Racial Justice Act (S461) is a common sense response to the documented racial disparities in our capital sentencing process. RJA is a conservative answer to the exoneration of Jonathan Hoffman, Edward Chapman, and Bo Jones. The NC Racial Justice Act is a fair sentencing reform that seeks to address racial disparities in capital sentencing.   The bill would allow defendants to present statistical evidence to determine if race played a significant role in a his/her death sentence or trial.   If a defendant is successful under RJA,  his/her sentence of death would be replaced with a sentence of Life in Prison Without Parole.   Learn More:  NC Racial Justice Act RJA in the News Current Status of RJA Support for RJA
