DON'T TIE THE MINIMUM WAGE TO WAR FUNDING

Congress has attached the minimum wage bill to an Iraq war supplemental spending package. That means that the only way to vote for an increase in the minimum wage is to vote for more spending for the Iraq war at the same time.

Tell Speaker Pelosi to strip the minimum wage from the Iraq Supplemental legislation, and send the minimum wage bill to a House/Senate conference committee instead.

Dear Speaker Pelosi, I was surprised and saddened to learn that the federal minimum wage bill has been attached to the Iraq war spending legislation now before Congress. These are two separate issues that deserve a vote on their own merits. It is manipulative to force legislators to vote to continue funding for the war in order to pass a minimum wage increase. As a member of the Unitarian Universalist church, I urge you to restore a clean bill on increasing the minimum wage, without add-ons or tax incentives. Send a minimum wage bill to a House/Senate conference committee instead. We have joined with other churches in supporting the "Let Justice Roll" campaign for fair wages for all people, especially the working poor. Our citizens need and deserve a minimum wage that is just, fair, and moral. Sincerely,
