Stop the Collective Punishment of Gaza -- Action Alert

"Please take a moment to write to your representatives asking them
to demand an end to the Israeli siege of Gaza.
The UN has issued several reports in the last two months warning that
food levels are at an all time low in the area and that all of Gaza
is suffering a humanitarian crisis.
Tell your representatives that you believe it is unacceptable for the U.S.
to support such draconian measures against millions of innocent Palestinians
over the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier."

====================================================

Christian Islamophobia & Anti-Semitism

"Our Islamophobia dates back to the time of the Crusades, and is
entwined with our chronic anti-semitism. Some of the first Crusaders
began their journey to the Holy Land by massacring the Jewish
communities along the Rhine valley; the Crusaders ended their campaign
in 1099 by slaughtering some 30,000 Muslims and Jews in Jerusalem. It
is always difficult to forgive people we know we have wronged.
Thenceforth Jews and Muslims became the shadow-self of Christendom, the
mirror image of everything that we hoped we were not - or feared that
we were."

-- Karen Armstrong

====================================================

The Pope and Christendom

"However, the Pope’s real fallibility . . . lies . . . in the underlying attachment
of his office to the ideology and practice of Christendom, the deal whereby the
church gains status in society by making itself dependent upon (and useful to)
society’s governing authorities.

This ‘Christendom mentality’, which has shaped much of historic Christianity since
the fourth century, is one which has grown accustomed to operating from a position of
power, prestige and protection.

Rather than developing the ekklesia (church) as a counter-cultural community which
lives out the Gospel, the Christendom church seeks to make societies and nations
‘Christian’ by accruing social advantage for itself and leaving unchallenged the
larger political agendas of ruling elites. It also expects to be listened to with respect;
and where it demands, others are called upon to obey."

-- Simon Barrow

====================================================

Christians and Just War Mentality

"When I speak of Gospel nonviolence around the nation, many respond to this effect:
This is all well and good, but sometimes you just have to kill someone!
Sometimes war is justified.
We really do have to kill Hitler, or Noriega, or Saddam, or Osama.
(Or whomever are told from time to time we're supposed to kill.)

If indeed the just-war theory finds endorsement in the Gospels,
then the garden scene stands as the ultimate moment in history in which
it could have been applied.

In that case Peter, in drawing his sword, would have fulfilled a
divine mission to protect his guy, the holy innocent one.

But at the precise moment Jesus commands the opposite:
"Put down the sword."

How can our generation be poorer than our parents'
when we work longer hours and create higher profits than ever before?

Since When did crossing a border turn a person into an outlaw?

What prevents the wealthiest state on earth from saving its citizens
from a flood predicted for decades?

Who benefits from commiting this country to endless war?

And Why do elections seem incapable of solving anything that actually matters?

Come hear a socialist perspective on how we can we can take control
of the issues that shape our lives!

Immigrant Rights

STOP THE DEPORTATIONS!
FREE THE DANBURY 11!
LEGALIZATION FOR ALL!

On September 19, the city government of Danbury assisted an immigration raid
in our own community. Disguising themselves as contractors, a police agent
picked up 11 people looking for work and detained them without telling their families.

Mayor Boughton's Assistant told a local newspaper that raids are coming next to
Stamford, Brewster and Katonah.

This raid is taking place in the context of a massive
immigration crackdown named "opperation return to
sender" in which workplaces and specific residential
ares are being targetted. In the interests of building
a real, sustained, grassroots movement capable of
challenging la migra at every turn, and creating
communities that are safe places for immigrants to
live, regardless of documentation, we should join our
sisters and brothers from Danbury and demand an end to
the deportations, legalization for all immigrants now,
and the immediate release of the Danbury 11!

This is nothing but a conscious attempt to terrorize the immigrant community!

It is time to stop Mayor Boughton & his Police Chief:

We will not be terrorized!
Stop the Deportations!
WE WANT THE DANBURY 11 FREED!

Saturday, September 30
Assemble at Kennedy Park at 12:30 p.m.
March to City Hall at 2:00 p.m.

No a

Remembering the Black Panther Party
Tuesday September 26th 2006, 6:00 PM
Albany Branch of Hartford Public Library
1250 Albany Avenue, by the corner with Blue Hills Ave.

Speakers will include:
Butch Lewis: Founding member of the Black Panther
Party in Hartford.
Ashanti Alston: Former New Jersey Panther, Black
Liberation Army POW, prison abolitionist and recently
the former Northeast Coordinator for Critical
Resistance. www.AnarchistPanther.net

In 1966 the Black Panther Party was founded to advance
the cause of Black Liberation. Their Ten-Point Program
demanded "Land, Bread, Housing, Education, Clothing,
Justice And Peace," for African-American communities,
as well as exemption from military service that would
use African-Americans to "fight and kill other people
of color in the world who, like Black people, are
being victimized by the White racist government of
America."

The Party also started community survival programs
such as free breakfast for students, civilian
monitoring against racist police violence, and when
necessary, armed community self-defense. They sought
to build ties to other movements, including radical
white students, poor Whites, Puerto Ricans, Chicanos,
and Third World movements against imperialism.

Join us on the 40th anniversary of the Party’s
founding to learn what lessons this important history
has to offer us today.
