EMERGENCY! LAST CHANCE TO SAVE HABEAS CORPUS

Anyone in U.S. custody, at home or abroad, must have the right
to challenge their detention in court. Nothing is more fundamental
to our democracy than this right.

Habeas Corpus ensures the right to challenge one's detention
in a court of law, not to be locked up under the President’s say-so,
guilty or innocent, never to be heard from again.

The rights of victims of rape and sexual assault are also under attack
in this legislation, an injustice that is completely under the radar:
both bills (below) would change the definition of rape and other torture
and cut back on hard-fought victories of victims of sexual violence.

Please call Sen. Lieberman and tell him to SUPPORT
the Specter-Levin Amendment on habeas corpus
when it gets introduced to amend the following bills
and to uphold the Geneva Conventions and allow survivors
of sexual violence to hold their perpetrators accountable.
S.3901, The Military Commissions Act of 2006, sponsored by Senator Warner and
S.3861, The Bringing Terrorists to Justice Act of 2006, sponsored by Senator Frist.

Joseph I. Lieberman (D - CT) - (202) 224-4041
Fax: 202-224-9750
Chief of Staff: Clarine Nardi Riddle; phone: 224-4041
Legislative Director: Joe Goffman
Military Legislative Assistant: Fred Downey

STOP THE DEPORTATIONS!
FREE THE DANBURY 11!
LEGALIZATION FOR ALL!

On September 19, the city government of Danbury assisted an immigration raid
in our own community. Disguising themselves as contractors, a police agent
picked up 11 people looking for work and detained them without telling their families.

Mayor Boughton's Assistant told a local newspaper that raids are coming next to
Stamford, Brewster and Katonah.

This raid is taking place in the context of a massive
immigration crackdown named "opperation return to
sender" in which workplaces and specific residential
ares are being targetted. In the interests of building
a real, sustained, grassroots movement capable of
challenging la migra at every turn, and creating
communities that are safe places for immigrants to
live, regardless of documentation, we should join our
sisters and brothers from Danbury and demand an end to
the deportations, legalization for all immigrants now,
and the immediate release of the Danbury 11!

This is nothing but a conscious attempt to terrorize the immigrant community!

It is time to stop Mayor Boughton & his Police Chief:

We will not be terrorized!
Stop the Deportations!
WE WANT THE DANBURY 11 FREED!

Saturday, September 30, Danbury
Assemble at Kennedy Park at 12:30 p.m.
March to City Hall at 2:00 p.m.

STOP ENFORCEMENT ONLY IMMIGRATION BILLS

Click link to send email to US Senators:
http://www.episcopalchurch.org/3654_78141_ENG_HTM.htm

This week, the Senate is scheduled to consider the
Secure Fence Act of 2006 (HR 6061)
which calls for 700 miles of double-layered fencing.

This bill is a diversion from the real work that needs
to be done to reach an agreement in both houses of Congress
on comprehensive immigration reform.

Contact your Senators and urge them to VOTE NO on HR 6061
and to oppose any attempts to attach the House's
enforcement-only measures to the Homeland Security
appropriations bill.

Additionally, several anti-immigrant bills
(specifically, HR 6094 and 6095) which passed in the House
this past Thursday, may still be included in the
Homeland Security appropriations bill.

These measures go far beyond allocating more money
for immigration enforcement. Among other things, they will:

1. Put asylum seekers and other vulnerable people
at risk of return to their persecutors.

2. Have a profound impact on the ability of immigrants —
legal and undocumented —
to have their day in court by making it practically impossible
for an immigrant who is a victim of government misdeeds
to gain a remedy from a judge.

3. Enlist state and local police in enforcing civil immigration laws,
which would result in their diverting resources from fighting crime
in their areas and destroy the trust built up with immigrant communities
who turn to them when they are victims of sexual assault,
human trafficking, or domestic violence.

Urge your senators to VOTE NO on the Secure Fence Act Of 2006
and block attempts to pass anti-immigrant measures on the
Homeland Security appropriations bill.
