Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement, Monday, Oct. 2, 2006

"It’s likely that no one will remind the congregants
that Israel has similarly “kidnapped” thousands of
Palestinian civilians, brought them to detention camps and
held them for months, sometimes years, without charges or
trial, often subjected to torture.

Most will then go on to praise Israel as a “democratic society,”
ignoring the fact that over three million Palestinians have lived
for thirty-nine years under Israel’s rule without ever having a vote
or say in the Kenesset.

No one is likely to talk about Israel’s nuclear capability,
which precludes other Middle East countries to accept Western demands
to refrain from developing their own nuclear capabilities.

No one is likely to talk about Israel’s impulsive decision to wage war
in July instead of negotiating a prisoner exchange with the Palestinians.

The great message of these High Holy Days is that change is possible—
we are not stuck. . . . We recognize that the ultimate power of the universe
is YHVH, the force of healing and transformation, the God that makes it
possible for us to overcome our own stuck places and come back to our highest selves."

Politics:

US Senators Capitulate to War on Terrorism

"No U.S. Senators were willing to engage in a filibuster against the
new authorization of torture.

The president or a committee in the defense dept. can arbitrarily decide
that our dissent from their policies constitutes material aid to terrorism.

our elected representatives capitulated in order to be “realistic” given their
fear of being labeled “soft” on terror.

All 100 Senators voted for a budget that gives $448 Billion to the Pentagon
to continue the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan."

-- The Network of Spiritual Progressives

No Human Being Is Illegal

Here in CT the recent arrest of 11 undocumented immigrants in Danbury,
whose only "crime" was their seeking to work to feed their families,
ushers in an a new escalation in the pogrom against (working-class Latino) immigrants
in which local police cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The families of the Danbury 11 were not even notified of their abduction.
Two rallies this past weekend protested the denial of dignity and human rights
to immigrants.
We must be vigilant in standing with immigrants, advocating for true immigration reform,
and demanding, "Free the Danbury 11."

Fas·cism (fashizem)
noun.
a system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator,
stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror
and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
Sounds familiar?
