Anti-Racism and Racial Justice in Ministry

"Anti-racism work requires lots of courage and willingness to be honest and vulnerable. It is sacred work and it is hard work. It calls on us to understand the difference between diversity work and racial justice work. There is a definite difference in the two. It calls on us to stay committed to changing the power differentials that whites and people of color have become accustomed to and have been socialized to believe are inevitable. It is a call for white people to talk to other white people and engage systems with the declaration, "White privilege, not in my name!"
-- Myra Brown

Eds. Note: People of Faith CT has been active in raising consciousness and advocating for justice in Hartford relating to white privilege and racial stereotyping in a) the white woman's false rape charge against "a big black man" and b) the Chez Est's booking of a gay white man performing in minstrel drag to denigrate black womanhood. The woman was subsequently charged with filing a false police report. More to follow.

Women's Rights
Atonement in Blood

"On February 11, the people of Portugal spoke. A largely Catholic nation sick of seeing women endure imprisonment, injury and the risk of death voted to reject its "backward" criminalization of abortion. That same movement is making progress across the world, as the realization dawns that prohibition of abortion never has made it go away; prohibition only makes abortion dangerous, even deadly. Our own history tells us so.

But even as restrictions on abortion are eased in countries that have had their fill of needless pain and carnage, our own politicians on the Christian right are introducing one abortion ban after another, legislation designed to plunge the women of our own country back into a hellish past."

Spirituality

A Lenten Challenge

"Even now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments,
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is God,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and renouncing punishment."

Stop the Raids: East Coast Regional Meeting to Address the Federal Crackdown on Immigrants

Sunday, Feb. 25
4 PM
Western CT State Univ.
Ives Concert Hall
(inside White Hall)
181 White St./Fifth Avenue
Danbury

Homeland Security is disappearing thousands of immigrant workers from their homes and workplaces every week. Its agents are forcibly breaking up families, trampling civil liberties, and violating due process rights. They have attacked union worksites and day laborer centers and tried to bust union organizing drives. Raids, arrests, and deportations have become a regular feature of life in towns which not one year ago witnessed historic mobilizations for immigrant rights.

Immigrants in Danbury have led the struggle in Connecticut, including the defeat of Mayor Boughton's proposal in 2005 to deputize state troopers to deport immigrants. But Homeland Security has disappeared 23 immigrant workers from Danbury in 4 months. Mayor Boughton encourages the arrests and lends the resources of City Hall to terrorize the immigrant residents of Danbury.

Join forces from across the region to discuss an effective response to these ongoing attacks.
