The Silence Means A Community Is Dead

"The existential philosopher writes that true freedom is achieved through action. When we as a community act, then this is living; the act of fighting for our community provides the energy necessary for community (as an organism) to live or thrive. If we fail to act, this very inaction brings death in a number of ways for individuals in the greater community."
-- Rev. Cornell Lewis

Clergy Statement: Health Care is a Human Right

"We raise our voices in support of a health care system that leaves no one out. God has created all of us and calls on us to care for each other. Caring for each other expresses our love for God. The existing gross inequality in the health status of people, especially as it pertains to ethnicity and race, is unacceptable - morally as well as politically, socially and economically. God invites us to bring justice to all people. God's consistent concern for healing challenges us to pursue affordable and quality health care for all people."

The Cross of Christ and Empire

The cross of Jesus was the consequence of his resistance to the ecclesiastical power of corrupted religion and the imperial power of militaristic politics. Surrounding Jesus were elements of religious authority willing to sacrifice their enemies, and imperial powers projecting their influence across the world by sending well-armed troops into foreign lands to subject the citizens and occupy their land.

If all who follow Jesus take up their cross, are they not, like him, laying down their swords? Are they not, like him, refusing to sacrifice others for their own, or their own culture's security, salvation and defense? Is not this way of Jesus God's way, is it not the revelation of God?

Pesach: Remembering Oppression and Liberation

"As Jews we are commanded to remember that we have experienced slavery and oppression. Yet for contemporary Jews perhaps the greater challenge is to remember not the oppression, but the fact of liberation. To remember only enslavement and forget redemption is symptomatic of the ways in which we are still enslaved. We are commanded to keep both of these experiences in mind and thus to identify with and support liberation struggles within our community and beyond."

-- Rabbi Ayelet S. Cohen

Women's Rights

Patriarchy, the Catholic Hierarchy and Emergency Contraception

"There is a direct connection between sexual assault of women and children, Foley's bucolic lifestyle at St. Thomas Seminary, and the denial of emergency contraception to rape victims at St. Francis Hospital. It's called patriarchy. Legislators can't vote patriarchy out of the Catholic Church, but they can vote it out of publicly funded Catholic hospitals. Now is the time do so."

Shut Down the Democratic Party Fundraiser Dinner with Nancy Pelosi

April 20, 2007
5:30 PM
Connecticut Convention Center
100 Columbus Blvd.
Hartford

The Democrats Will Wine and Dine. Maybe We Can Show Some Spine!

The Democratic Party has managed to successfully ride the wave of opposition to the policies of the Bush administration. And yet, they continue to fund the War and Occupation of Iraq. The monstrosity of Guantanamo Bay continues unchallenged; innocent civilians, citizen and undocumented alike, are still being indefinitely detained; and after four years they're still telling us the troops will be pulled out "next year."

Join us for this nonviolent action to shut down the dinner.
