CT NETWORK TO ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY

Response to the Petit Family Murders in Cheshire

"Murder and the death penalty are simply two sides of the same coin. Let us not drag the surviving Dr. Petit through the endless appeals of a death sentence - that would be cruel and unusual. If these men are guilty, then they must be locked away . . . .  Only then will Dr. Petit be able to grieve his loss and remember the love of his family and not the hatred of their deaths."

UPCOMING PLAYS ON SOCIAL JUSTICE

Fool for Christ: The Life of Dorothy Day

Thursday, September 27th, 2007
7:30-8:30 pm
Unitarian Society of Hartford
50 Bloomfield Ave, Hartford, CT

For over 50 years of her life, Dorothy Day served the poor in New York City. With Peter Maurin, she founded a movement and a newspaper, both called The Catholic Worker, which challenged Christians to work for a just future while standing in solidarity with the poor. She was an avid anti-war protester who challenged the hierarchical church to condemn war. Her soup kitchens and houses of hospitality were gathering spots and places of refuge for the poor but for the socially and religiously concerned, for intellectuals and activists, for reformers and radicals. When Dorothy Day died in 1980 at the age of 83, it was observed, "she was the most influential, interesting, significant figure in the history of American Catholicism."

Please join us in celebrating her life, her message of love, and her vision of a just and equitable world.

Doors open at 6:45pm. Light refreshments in Fellowship Hall following show.
There will be a free will donation taken at the door to benefit the work of several area social justice organizations. Please bring one non-perishable item of food.

Hartbeat Ensemble's Plays in the Parks Series

Plays focus on people who are homeless in Greater Hartford.

HartBeat Ensemble will perform five free outdoor shows in Hartford neighborhood parks this August and one in New Britain. Each park show will consist of three to four short plays about people who are homeless in Greater Hartford and will be interspersed with live music from Hartford's best musicians.

The free summer theater series is a continuation of HartBeat's mission to create plays about citizens of Greater Hartford. This year's plays come from interviews conducted with clients of several homeless shelters in Hartford.

Plays in the Parks 2007 is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness. "When people experiencing homelessness have the opportunity to speak their truth and when we truly listen, it informs and inspires our commitment to end this grave social injustice," says Carol Walter, Executive Director of the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness.

PROPHESY

"If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.

Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.

The loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or imagined, from abroad.

-- James Madison

WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY, AUG. 26

National Women's Fightback Network

We Are Fighting For Our Rights!

Women's Equality Day, August 26, commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment legalizing women's right to vote.

But it has taken fierce struggle in the streets and in our communities — against racism and sexism - to make that right real for all people.

It will take that kind of struggle to defend the rights of all women now.

So let's make a Women's Equality Day full of living struggle! Let's come out in the streets to say NO to attacks on reproductive rights, NO to anti-woman inequality, racism and poverty, and YES to reproductive freedom, rights and equality for all!

Watch the online Video of Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and Sam Brownback - for an "enlightening" discussion on pro-choice issues.

Worship Resources for Economic Justice on Labor Day Weekend

The worship service on Labor Day weekend is an excellent time to lift up the workers among us, especially those who lack basic economic necessities, experience demeaning or unsafe work conditions, or suffer harassment or discrimination on the job.

Many middle-class White Americans fail to see the low-wage workers in our midst because they may be immigrants or native-born people of color.

As people of faith, we ask for eyes that can truly see these workers and their reality, for ears to hear their stories and their cry for justice, and for warm hearts to respond to their pain with actions for justice.

Interfaith Worker Justice, has many Online Resources to assist you in planning a Labor Weekend service.

SPOTLIGHT ON TORTURE, OCT 21 - 28

SHOW HBO'S FILM "GHOSTS OF ABU GHRAIB" IN YOUR CONGREGATION

In a nation-wide project called "Spotlight on Torture," the National Religious Campaign Against Torture has arranged for DVD copies of "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" to be available on a first come, first served basis to 950 congregations during the week of October 21-28. Congregations can choose the date and time they wish to schedule a screening and discussion within that week.

"Ghosts of Abu Ghraib," an 80-minute HBO film, features the familiar and very disturbing pictures of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison and raises many questions:

How did torture become an accepted practice at Abu Ghraib? Did U.S. government policies make it possible? How much damage has the aftermath of Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world?

Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy looks beyond the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred.

If you have additional questions, please contact John Humphries, NRCAT's Director for Program Coordination and contact person for the Spotlight on Torture project, at spotlight@nrcat.org and 860-216-7972.
