2 MASS MARCHES ON WASHINGTON

End the War NOW!

Countdown to a Showdown

Sponsored by the
A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition

Bush's disgusting photo-op trip to Iraq is just one more optical illusion. The "surprise" visit to the heavily-guarded Al Asad air base, with 10,000 U.S. troops, is the latest in the new propaganda blitz to convince Congress and the country to fork over $3 billion each week to fund Bush's fantasy that Iraq can be occupied and subdued. Bush must also convince the people of the United States that they should keep sending their sons and daughters to their deaths.

This is a critical demonstration for all those who oppose the war and people can participate in different ways. There will
be a fully permitted march and rally (for those who will not be risking arrest) in addition to the Die-In led by Iraq War Veterans.

UPCOMING PLAY ON SOCIAL JUSTICE

Fool for Christ: The Life of Dorothy Day

Thursday, September 27th, 2007
7:30-8:30 pm
Unitarian Society of Hartford
50 Bloomfield Ave, Hartford, CT

For over 50 years of her life, Dorothy Day served the poor in New York City. With Peter Maurin, she founded a movement and a newspaper, both called The Catholic Worker, which challenged Christians to work for a just future while standing in solidarity with the poor. She was an avid anti-war protester who challenged the hierarchical church to condemn war. Her soup kitchens and houses of hospitality were gathering spots and places of refuge for the poor but for the socially and religiously concerned, for intellectuals and activists, for reformers and radicals. When Dorothy Day died in 1980 at the age of 83, it was observed, "she was the most influential, interesting, significant figure in the history of American Catholicism."

Please join us in celebrating her life, her message of love, and her vision of a just and equitable world.

Doors open at 6:45pm. Light refreshments in Fellowship Hall following show.
There will be a free will donation taken at the door to benefit the work of several area social justice organizations. Please bring one non-perishable item of food.

FROM THE KORAN

"O you who believe,
stand out firmly for justice,
as witnesses to God,
even as against yourselves,
your parents or your kin,
and whether it be against rich or poor . . .
and if you distort justice
or decline to do justice,
verily God is well acquainted with all that you do."

SPOTLIGHT ON TORTURE, OCT 21 - 28

SHOW HBO'S FILM "GHOSTS OF ABU GHRAIB" IN YOUR CONGREGATION

In a nation-wide project called "Spotlight on Torture," the National Religious Campaign Against Torture has arranged for DVD copies of "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" to be available on a first come, first served basis to 950 congregations during the week of October 21-28. Congregations can choose the date and time they wish to schedule a screening and discussion within that week.

"Ghosts of Abu Ghraib," an 80-minute HBO film, features the familiar and very disturbing pictures of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison and raises many questions:

How did torture become an accepted practice at Abu Ghraib? Did U.S. government policies make it possible? How much damage has the aftermath of Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world?

Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy looks beyond the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred.

If you have additional questions, please contact John Humphries, NRCAT's Director for Program Coordination and contact person for the Spotlight on Torture project, at spotlight@nrcat.org and 860-216-7972.
