Issue #2   9 February 2009
This week a basic human rights campaign will commence at the Legislative Office Building. This is the Campaign mandating Paid Sick Days for full-time employees, a right long overdue for workers in CT.

The rights of Palestinians is the topic at 2 events at CCSU in New Britain. Check out the Panel Discussion by Student Activists and the talk on State Terrorism in the Middle East by Norman Finkelstein.

The International Socialist Organization sponsors a discussion on winning a society free of War, Racism and Inequality in the Obama era at SCSU in New Haven.

We also have 2 Action Alerts. The first is to restore AIDS funding eliminated under Gov. Rell's budget proposal. We must not allow the budget to be balanced on the backs of one of the most vulnerable groups in society.

Secondly, we must advocate for those who have no voice in the halls of power: animals. We must begin to prohibit the cruel and inhumane practices of animal dissection, torture and experimentation.

From the CT AIDS Resource Coalition:

WHAT WE ARE ASKING YOU TO DO:

1. Call your state Representative and Senator, NOW! If you don't know who they are click here http://www.cga.ct.gov/maps/townlist.asp

2. Tell them to restore the $2.5 million to the AIDS Service line in the DPH budget (you can personalize what that loss would mean to you/your agency), people with AIDS are NOT expendable!

3. Get 5 people from your life/agency/church/staff/board to do the same!

4. Come to the DSS (February 18th, 4PM, Room 2C) and DPH budget hearings (February 20th, 3 PM, Room 2C). Wear your GOT AIDS? t-shirt. Let me know if you'd like to testify.

Quotable Quotes

"There is no more revolutionary pressure in the world than that of a commitment to social transformation through nonviolent means. Trying to change the world through violence is not only non-revolutionary but passé and ineffective. Nonviolent direct action was the commitment of Jesus the Christ and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. here in the United States. . . .
Ours is a revolutionary movement that stops nothing short of world transformation. There is no greater revolution on Earth nor shall it ever be. While we may never see it completed, it remains both noble and ongoing."

-- Dr. Matthew V. Johnson

War, Recession & Obama:
Socialist Strategies for Winning Radical Change

Sponsored by The International Socialist Organization

Thursday Feb 12
7:30 pm
Engleman B111
Southern Connecticut State University

After eight years of wars, widening class inequality, and crumbling social services, the vast majority of the population feel that they finally have a sympathetic ear in Washington.

But with the economic crisis still unfolding, and the material content of Obama's promises still undefined, we need, now more than ever, socialists and socialist politics to help lead the fights for the radical change we deserve.

How do we defend abortion rights, start redistributing the wealth in our favor, and win gay marriage nationally?
