Stop the Violence in Oaxaca

November 22, 2009 Subject: I wanted to make sure that you were aware of the tragic murder of Bradley Roland Will, by government-backed paramilitaries in Oaxaca, Mexico. Brad was a friend of mine, and a reporter. He was shot in the chest while videotaping a demonstration in Oaxaca on Friday afternoon. Brad was trying to report on the the ongoing human rights travesty in Oaxaca, a travesty which has only been exacerbated with the decision by Mexican President Vicente Fox to send federal troops to crush a legitimate, popular uprising against a violent and corrupt governor, Ulises Ruiz Ortega. Currently the State Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Brad's death. However, I and many of Brad's friends, do not believe that the U.S. Government is doing enough to help solve the conflict in Oaxaca by peaceful means, as opposed to the violent means currently being employed by President Fox, in Brad's name. I therefore request that you do the following: 1. Follow up and monitor the ongoing State Department investigation to ensure that Brad's killers are brought to justice, and that the full story behind his murder is told. 2. Call upon Mexican President Vicente Fox to withdraw all federal troops from Oaxaca, end the hostilities against the people of Oaxaca, and call for new elections to select a new Governor of Oaxaca. 3. Call upon President Bush to pressure his friend President Fox to take the steps just detailed above. One of your constituents has been murdered, with the tacit approval and support of the Governor of Oaxaca. The President of Mexico has used this murder as a pretext to increase the violence against the people of Oaxaca, who are demanding that new elections be held. We must not allow these international criminal acts to go on without our vocal and resolute opposition. Please, help us to amplify our call for justice for Brad, by adding your voice to ours.
