Tell Suez: Stop Exploiting Our Water!

Imagine that you live in a family of six. If your home were a microcosm of the world population today, someone in your family wouldn't have access to safe drinking water. Another wouldn't have enough clean water for cooking and bathing.

Suez-one of the largest private water corporations in the world-wants to profit from this growing global water crisis. Suez's irresponsible behavior has left thousands of people without access to potable water, from Atlanta, Georgia to El Alto, Bolivia.

Dear Mr. Mestrallet,

I write to voice my concerns about your company’s water division. Suez, as one of the world’s largest providers of water and sanitation systems, has placed profit over the human right to water by engaging in irresponsible and abusive practices in countries such as Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and the Philippines.

While you have promised better water quality and conservation, your record shows otherwise:
-	skyrocketing rates when citizens were promised affordable water
-	poor neighborhoods left out of service contracts
-	cut-offs to those who can’t afford to pay
-	incompliance with contracts and negligent management
-	worsening water quality

These negligent and abusive business practices have contributed to the loss of major contracts, including those with Atlanta, Georgia and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Yet Suez makes it very difficult for developing countries like Bolivia to exit a contract without expensive legal actions.

I ask that you fulfill Suez’ contractual obligations and drop any and all lawsuits against governments wishing to terminate contracts. As Suez’s leader, above all I encourage you to respect universal access to clean and affordable water as a human right and to exhibit this respect in the actions of your corporation.
