Oil companies and their employees have donated over $115 million in campaign contributions to federal politicians since 2001. Thanks to this influence, even with record windfall profits over the last year, the oil industry is subsidized to the tune of roughly $6 billion.

Big Oil and friends have already invested over $10 million in the 2006 elections. With so much money changing hands it is becoming more and more difficult to know whose voices are really being heard. Do politicians work for their constituents or for the money? Honorable Congressperson, I am writing to you to convey my concern over the influence of oil company money on American politics. It has come to my attention that Congressional candidates have received over $10 million, for 2006 alone, in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies and their interests. I am increasingly concerned and dismayed by the ability of oil companies to influence the political process and I urge you to refuse to accept any campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry, as well as their executives and political action committees. As a constituent, it is difficult for me to know if my voice will be heard when I have to compete with the well-funded voices of Big Oil. Particularly in the wake of the recent windfall profits for the oil industry, it is becoming more and more apparent that money talks and, by default, my rights walk. America is at a crossroads in regards to oil independence- politically, economically, and technologically. As my Representative, I am asking you to stand up to the oil companies and take the first, bold step towards a political arena that can honestly declare itself free from their influence. Please refuse all oil and gas contributions that come your way.
