I am writing to ask your support and advocacy for H1699, a bill to create a junk mail opt-out registry. This registry makes sense for municipal budgets, for people's privacy rights, and for our children's healthy and secure future. I hope you will enthusiastically support its passage. The people in North Carolina and local governments spend over $8.5 million per year to collect and dispose of almost 535 MILLION pounds of bulk mail that doesn't get recycled. Nationally, the production and disposal of junk mail consumes more energy than 3 million cars. It also wastes more than 100 million trees worth of paper each year - that's the equivalent of clearcutting Rocky Mountain National Park every four months! People of North Carolina have the right to post "No Soliciting" signs in our driveways, turn off our TVs and radios when unwanted ads come on, and sign up for the popular DoNotCall.gov telemarketer registry. Likewise, we should have the right to opt out of ad mail with an easy-to-use Do Not Junk registry. Please let me know whether you will support this important legislation.
