Organic consumers buy local, organic & fair trade... But we're not buying this war!

A greater market share for local, organic & fair trade products means little in a world of constant war and climate chaos. As supporters of peace, justice and sustainability, we have to stand up to the violence, injustice and devastation of the US government’s war on Iraq.

If war were a product, we'd boycott it, right? So, as Bush comes to Congress asking for more money for war, let’s tell our elected officials: We buy local, organic & fair trade...And we're not buying this war! Write Congress and the President:

Please cosponsor H.R.508, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey’s Bring Our Troops Home and Restore Sovereignty to Iraq Act.

Introduced on January 17, 2007, with 16 cosponsors, H.R.508 would require the withdrawal of all U.S. troops and military contractors from Iraq within six months.

Please reject President Bush’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq. Please cosponsor S.CON.RES.2, a resolution opposing Bush’s plan to send over 20,000 more troops to Iraq. Democratic Senators Carl Levin and Joseph Biden as well as Republicans Chuck Hagel and Olympia Snowe introduced the resolution.

Congress has already appropriated funding that will support our troops and keep this occupation going for at least another six months, possibly longer. That funding instead should be used to finance an aggressive withdrawal plan that brings our troops home to their families.

The 2002 Congressional Authorization for the War in Iraq should be rescinded. Construction of permanent US military bases in the country should be prohibited. The US should have no long-term control over Iraqi oil. The oil in Iraq belongs to the Iraqi people.

Excluding the veterans’ benefits, H.R.508 would cost pennies on the dollar, compared to continuing the occupation for two more years in Iraq. It will save lives, bodies and minds, and it will give Iraq back to the Iraqis. The Bring Our Troops Home and Restore Sovereignty to Iraq Act is an important step in regaining our country’s credibility in the region and throughout the world, and it provides the President and Congress with a comprehensive strategy for responding to the majority of Americans who want our troops to come home.
