Take action to protect Kamchatka's globally important wetlands!

Please help protect our global legacy of wetlands in honor of International Wetlands Day!

As you know, wetland areas are globally important habitats. They serve as rest stops for millions of waterbirds, provide nurseries for young fish, and are the most efficient water purifications systems we could ask for.

Yet as we celebrate, international companies are planning to drill for oil in one of the world's most pristine wetlands areas on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula—a sanctuary for Pacific salmon and endangered species like the Steller's sea eagle.

The Russian government has granted the Canadian company CEP International Petroleum Ltd. an oil exploration license for an area including Kamchatka wetlands, recognized under the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands of International Importance.

Kamchatka wetlands are critical habitat for salmon, with up to one-quarter of our Pacific salmon spawning on this peninsula, hundreds of thousands of waterbirds, and endangered species like Steller's sea eagle. The impact of oil drilling would bring devastation to these wild places, as well as local communities that depend on thriving fisheries economies.

Please take action!

Ask the Russian government to uphold the Ramsar Convention and stop oil development projects impacting Kamchatka's globally important wetlands.
