November 22, 2009 Subject: I urge you to stop the rush to sell and develop western public land. I am particularly concerned with the Washington County Growth and Conservation Act of 2006 (S. 3636/H.R. 5796), introduced by Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT) and Congressman Jim Matheson (D-UT), which would sell off public lands to fund millions, perhaps hundreds of millions, in pork projects to accelerate sprawl in one county in southwestern Utah. S. 3636 would sell off or give away nearly 40 square miles of public land, at the least, and use the potentially astronomical proceeds to fund road building and water development, solely in Washington County, Utah. The legislation also undermines vast wilderness lands in the Zion-Mojave region, landscapes of towering sandstone cliffs, high desert mountains, and untrammeled stretches of the Mojave Desert. The bill's introduction came without any official public hearing in Utah on the bill, and without regard to the concerns expressed in the thousands of letters, emails, and phone calls he has received on the proposal from Utahns and from Americans all over the country. In spite of widespread citizen concern, Senator Bennett is pushing for Congressional action on this flawed bill this fall.
